3271 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1891 (July 2): Iran 12 ch. postal stationery envelope sent registered from Kum, Persia to Adelaide, South Australia with 1889 Iran 2 ch. pale blue, three examples, used on reverse all cancelled by Kum datestamp and prepaying 18 chahis comprising 12 chahis for a ½ ounce ship letter to South Australia plus 6 chahis registration. On reverse, the cover is endorsed “.... Persian Road / Comp. a Sultanabad / Perse”, a remote settlement near the eastern border, over 700 kms. from where the cover was postmarked at Kum, 150 kms. south of Tehran. Obverse with Persian registration label and transit datestamp of “BOUSHIR”, 850 kms. south near the head of the Persian Gulf, with a final arrival datestamp for Adelaide. One of the most extraordinary origin/destination covers of the Australian Colonies, especially from such a remote town. By comparison, there are no pre-UPU covers recorded from Australia to Persia. Route: Departed Sultanabad overland via Kum 2 July 1891 to Boushir; by steamer to Aden. P&O Line: Departed Aden (11 Aug) per “Massilia” via King Georges Sound (31 Aug) to Adelaide, arriving 3 Sept 1891 (63 days). (Image 1)

408 cover image1795/1858: Eight different pre-philatelic covers from Peru, all in fine condition, including a cover with FRANCA AREQUIPA, another with a HUAM handstamp, and a Spanish Colonial prepaid cover with FRANCA and TRUXILLO. Further a cover with GUANCA / VELICA, one with HUAREZ in red and CHACAS on the same cover, and a prepaid entire letter from Lima to Puno bearing an unlisted framed "PAGADO" (Paid) handstamp in black, rated "3½" reales at right, with a straight-line "YSLAY" transit in red (Colareta fig. 1) and an AREQUIPA transit (Colareta fig. 5) on the reverse. Another cover from Huamachuco to Trujillo, dated "Setbre 30 / 1850," is rated "4½" reales in manuscript and struck with a very fine truncated "HUAMACHUCO" handstamp in red (Colareta fig. 1). From the period of Stamp Shortage, a prepaid cover from Lima to Tacna is endorsed at the top "Franca por falta de estampillas" and struck with a dotted "CALLAO 1-2" handstamp in black (Lamy & Rinck fig. 41), an exceptional and most unusual cover. 409 cover imageColonial 1806c.: Double rate cover from Huancavelica addressed to Bartolomé María de las Heras Navarro (Archbishop of Lima from 31 Mar 1806 – 6 September 1823) in 'Los Reyes' (Lima) and rated "2½" reales in manuscript, sent prepaid and struck with truncated "FRANCA" handstamp at top and by truncated "GUANCA / VELICA" despatch, both in red. 412 cover 1850/55: Official printed Postal Receipts from Lima for amounts due for Cargo - 1850/52 with five examples with "Vapor" (and ships now identified in pencil) including 1852 Cargo form from Islay endorsed "Vapor Lima" at top; larger format Cargo forms (again with ship concerned named in pencil) dated 1851-1854 and used primarily at Lima but with others from Pisco, Yca and Yquique (10 forms); 1855 with 7 examples each with "Vapor del Norte" or "Vapor del Sur" or just "Vapor" in manuscript at top. A generally fine group with much of interest to the PSNC or Maritime collector (22 items).
