Duley & Co St. Johns - NFLD', endorsed per "Vickers" Machine, franked with $1 Trans-Atlantic surcharge on 15c with “No comma after Post” variety, cancelled by St. Johns machine cancel to Birmingham, England. Envelope with vert. fold and minor flaws, otherwise fine and scarce first flight cover. Capt. John Alcock, pilot and Lt. Arthur Litten Brown, navigator, succeeded the first successful non-stop flight across the Atlantic on a distance of 1,960 miles in 16h 12’ on a Vickers-Vimy airplane. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

Duley & Co St. Johns - NFLD', endorsed "Trans-Atlantic Air Post / per 'Handley Page' Machine", franked with $1 Trans-Atlantic surcharged 15c. with “No comma" variety after Post, cancelled by St. Johns machine cancel and "Harbour Grace Ju 14 19" cds. alongside to Birmingham, England. Envelope with vertical fold away from stamp and little browned on reverse, otherwise fine and scarce, signed Kessler. After repairs, they continued on to New York, connecting with the dirigible R34 that had already arrived there on July 6th for furtherance to England. As they missed the R34 that took off on July 9th in the night, the mail arrived on July 10th went via Cunarder “Mauretania” which was docked in New York Harbour. 1731 cover image1927 (MY 21): De Pinedo Supplementary Mail - Unoverprinted 60 c. black, tied to envelope addressed to London, cancelled on arrival "ROMA CENTRO CORRISPONDENZA ORDINARIA 22.6.27.19", with 'Trepassy' cds. of May 21 alongside. Filing vertical folds with one affecting the stamp. Nevertheless a fine and scarce cover, signed Cole. Rare unoverprinted usage from the final part of the supplementary mail, which was not cancelled in Newfoundland in case it was too late for transmission. 225 covers carried with specially overprinted stamps and 75 without overprint, of which only 20 covers cancelled on arrival in Italy. 1732 cover image"Southern Cross" Harbour Grace to New York Flight 1930 (Jun. 26): Cover franked with Newfoundland 1c. horizontal strip of four, each stamp tied by 'Harbour Grace Jun. 26' circular datestamp plus additional US 2 c., backstamped on reverse by "Grand Cent. Sta. N.Y. Jul 2 1930" to Alston, Massachusetts. Envelope sensibly repaired, but very rare as only seven covers carried on this leg. Kingsford-Smith together with John P. Saul, navigator, M. Everet Van Dyk, relief pilot and John W. Stanage, radio operator established a flight time record of 31 ½ hours and the second successful East-West Transatlantic crossing Ireland to Newfoundland AAMC 1111b = $500.00 (Image 1) (Image 2)

De La Rue Handpainted Essay, in rose-red, pink and chinese white, dated 21 December 1892, fine and very attractive. Rare. One of four essays of similar design prepared by De La Rue in an unsuccessful bid to win the contract to produce cards for the Oil Rivers Protectorate. One example is in the National Postal Museum dated 23 Nov. 92. The other two are dated 23 November 1892 and 21 December 1892. The former sent 5 July 1893 to Birmingham, England, with two strikes to front in black. The latter sent 7 June 1894 to Germany (via S.S. Boma), with two strikes to front in red. Endorsed "per Axim(s)", with a partial oval "Registered / London" in red dated 10 October 1895. To the reverse a "Manchester / Registered" circle datestamp 10 October 1895. Soiling.
