3094 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1860 (Nov 29): Cover from Malta to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1857 Great Britain 4 d. rose tied by "A25" duplex and prepaying 4 d. and underpaid 2 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter of 6 d. to New South Wales. With the steamer arriving in Melbourne, the cover was attempted to be delivered to William Street, but returned to the G.P.O. where the rare “MISSENT TO / MELBOURNE” handstamp in red was applied. Forwarded on to Sydney a week later with datestamps on the reverse. Fine and rare, being the earlier of the two recorded covers from the British Post Office in Malta to the Australian Colonies. Route - P&O Line: Departed Malta 29 Nov 1860 to Alexandria (3 Dec); overland to Suez; “Nemesis” (6 Dec) to Galle (23 Dec); “Benares” (23 Dec) via King Georges Sound (7 Jan 1861) to Melbourne (12 Jan). Australasian Steam Navigation Co: Departed Melbourne (19 Jan) per “City of Sydney”, arriving 21 Jan 1861 (70 days). Note: The Australasian Steam Navigation Co’s “City of Sydney” ran aground and was later wrecked at Cape Green on the 18 Nov 1862 on a voyage from Melbourne to Sydney. 6167 cover image1883 (March 22): Envelope addressed to Basil Hall Chamberlain in Tokyo, Japan, endorsed "By P&O Steamer" franked Great Britain 1880 2 d. pale rose, in both horizontal and vertical pair each tied by fine 'A25' duplex, SINGAPORE and YOKOHAMA backstamps. A remarkable combination paying double weight to a rare destination for GB used in Malta. Note: Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1035) after teaching at the Imperial Naval Academy in Tokyo was from 1882 a Professor at Tokyo Imperial University, whilst writing some of the earliest translations of Haiku into English. Thence to France with ANGLETERRE in black and many differing rates and London framed "Returned / for Postage" on reverse where eventually paid 2 shillings by Forwarding Agent with manuscript "Port Payé à Londres le 22 Decembre 1814 Deux Escalines...Samuel Bryant & Co." on reverse and charged '18' décimes due on arrival (Dec 27). 1325 cover image1817: Large part covers (2), both from Port Louis to London, each with good strikes of "PORT LOUIS / UNPAID" handstamps (Proud UP2, in use for less than a year) struck in black; one with "Calcutta / Not Paid" transit (Oct 1817) cds in black and fine "SHIP LETTER / GRAVESEND" in black; rated 2 s. 4 d. to pay on receipt; the other cover with "♚ / INDIA / SHIP LETTER" (March 4, 1818) in black (Robertson In.P2, in use for a year, rated very scarce) superbly struck in black. 1326 cover image1819 (July 26): Entire letter from Port Louis to Perth, Scotland endorsed "Single sheet" and "pr. Cerberus" at lower left, struck on despatch with very rare oval "MAURITIUS / PACKET-LETTER" (July 26) in black (Proud SL1 - latest recorded usage). Received in London and backstamped in red (Nov 25) and thence with Scottish Wheel Tax framed "½" in black; eventually charged at 1 s. 7 d. rate: rated at the newly reduced India Ship Letter rate of 4 d. + inland charges to Perth of 1 s. 3 d. (a Packet Letter prior to July 1819 would have cost 4 s. 9 d.). A rare entire. Note: HMS Cerberus (launched in 1794) was a 32-gun fifth-rate frigate launched in 1794 and sold by the Admiralty in 1814 after service in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. 1327 cover image1838 (Sept 1): Entire letter from Port Louis to London endorsed per "Waterloo" at lower left, with weak "Mauritius / Post Office" cds in red on reverse. The entire landed with framed "RYDE / SHIP LETTER" struck in black (Robertson S3) with Ryde cds on reverse (Dec 22). On arrival in London cover was correctly noted as an India rate entire and the Ship Letter erased by rare use the "Crutched Cross" handstamp and scarce framed "INDIA" marking in brown (Robertson In.8) and charged 1 s. due to pay. Rare and very fine. Note: The "Waterloo" was a convict ship on the return leg from New South Wales. (Image 1) (Image 2)

1328 cover image1845 (March 29): Entire letter from Port Louis to Bordeaux endorsed "per Prescursor, Overland via Marseilles", originally sent outside the mails care of Forwarding Agents Ackland, Boyd & Co in Colombo; mailed from there with superb "♚ / COLOMBO / POST PAID" oval datestamp in black (May 10). Prepaid "1/8d." in manuscript, thence via Alexandria (June 9) and Malta where slitted for disinfection and "Puifié au Lazaret / Malte" applied in black. Bordeaux arrival (June 18). Displays well, a fine entire. Note: Carried by P&O "Precursor" from Galle (12 May), from Alexandria (6 June) on the "Great Liverpool" to Malta (11 June), Marseille (15 June). (Image 1) (Image 2)
