Great Britain Mulready and Caricature
Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
4023 cover image1840: Mulready 1 d. wrapper, stereo A8, a used example from Bath to Ipswich neatly cancelled by red Maltese Cross with reverse showing double arc "Bath" despatch cds in black (21 May 1840) with London transit cds in red (May 22) in red. A fine 'May Date' usage, however the contents are perhaps even more interesting: "Thursday May 21st 1840. This is the first of these "Envelopes" that I have seen - the pink and blue threads which you may observe in it, are to prevent forgeries....Have you seen any of these envelopes? I think they are the strangest looking things I ever saw, particularly after so much was said (before their appearance) of their beauty and elegance...". Faults but a splendid and unusual Mulready Gi = £ 1'200. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

4303 piece/cover imageGB Used Abroad 1856/1901: Postmark collection contained upon 34 pages, comprising 10 covers/cover fronts, 24 pieces and over 160 used items off cover, including multiples and blocks. The study is almost exclusively of the British Post Office cancellation in Colombia and Panama such as the "E88" (Gi Z45-Z70) upright barred oval (Colon) and the "C35" duplex (Gi Z71- Z111), although there are examples on cover sent from Great Britain which have been circulated via the offices in Panama. This is a reasonably comprehensive assembly with gaps only on the very rare values. However, many of the scarcer and more unsual usages are displayed and a few illustrate uncommon combinations. Noted among others; 1877 4 d. sage plates 15 & 16 cancelled by "E88" (7) and also a plate 16 cancelled by 'Colon' transit cds. There is a good selection of line engraved issues cancelled by the "C35" including; ½ d., 1 d., 1½ d. and 2 d., also 1867 5 s. rose plate 2 cancelled by 'Colon' cds. A wrapper franked with 1880 1 d. venetian tied by the "C35" duplex sent to Montevideo; four examples of the 1867 5 s. rose plate 2 used in Panama and the 1867 2 s. blue (5) and 10 d. red-brown plate 1 (3). Condition and strikes can be mixed in places, as is often the case with such material. However, a treasure trove of material, with much scope to develope or breakdown. Valuable assembly Gi = £ 21'322+ not all items priced or listed. Ex the Brian Moorhouse estate.
