Marginal watermark line on SL at right, ironed and with third stamp SG with closed tear at top and sixth stamp SI with closed tear from base, despite imperfections a remarkable strip of dramatic appearance. Usual creases and reinforced due to refolding and resend clear of adhesives, a very rare "turned cover" with two different plates of the 1 d. black cancelled in two different colours. 4076 cover image1840 (Sept 8): Entire letter written from Graham's Town, Cape of Good Hope originally addressed to London, struck with oval "♚ / GENERAL POST OFFICE / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE" in black, landed with framed "INDIA LETTER / FALMOUTH" in red on reverse and London arrivals in red (Dec 8). Struck on arrival with framed "POSTAGE NOT PAID / TO LONDON" in red. On arrival readdressed within London to Spencer Lodge, Wandsworth Common after payment of the ship rates ("8" deleted as found to be above ¼ ounce and "1/4d." applied and deleted after payment) and 1 d. charged in black. Further 1840 1 d. black, plate 8, lettered LK applied for forwarding on to "Crescent, Bath"; tied by Maltese Cross in black. A remarkable and most interesting entire. Cert. BPA (1990).
