2433 image1858 (July 21/Aug 2g): 108 parale blue on rose horizontally laid paper, a used example with enormous margins on three sides, just touched at right not greatly impairing the wonderful appearance, with interesting break in the outer circle above "?" at right, neatly cancelled by part "PIATRA / MOLDOVA" circular datestamp ".3/10" in blue. Illustrated in Heimbüchler "The Bull's Heads of Moldavia" on page 409, position 3. A great rarity: only seven examples of the 108 pa. are known used from Piatra. Certs. 2434 cover image1864ca: Two covers - one a single 30 p. franking to 'Focsani', bright blue stamp from tied by a black "BRAILA" cancel and a blue sender's cancel, which is applied to protect the stamp, with a blue c.d.s. "BRAILA" alongside. The second item is a small registered envelope from "GIURGIU" to 'Bucharest', featuring two 30 p. stamps, which have almost octagonal cut but complete margins, addressed to Bucharest. 2436 cover image1872: 25 b. orange, horizontal pair, 50 b. rose, and 1876 10 b. blue, vertical pair, used on a registered cover from Ploie?ti, Romania, to Ravenna, Italy, dated 13 December 1878. The stamps are tied by a circular datestamp in blue, addressed to 'Countess Constance Rasponi'. It features manuscript registration and a handstamp 'RECOM' in blue alongside. Upon arrival in Ravenna, the cover was redirected to Bucharest, Romania. The reverse shows three indistinct circular datestamp marks in black and a Bologna transit date of 20 December 1878. The envelope is secured with five wax seals and features a flap with a gold crown. There are opening tears at the top front and side, and part of the flap is missing (the back displays an 'E. Appay / 175.176 Galleries De Valdis Palais Royal' producer's cachet in red). Some soiling and stains are present. This is a rare mixed franking. Cert. E. 2443 cover image1872/1900: Collection of the post-classical postmarks of the stamp period mainly on official mail (39 items) and including also (3) items bearing the rectangular Postage Due markings of the classical period. The lot contains some interesting rural markings, some of them from the classical period used later, and has also a few covers that were not accepted as official and were presumably taxed on arrival. Some nice strikes noted, including GARA RUGINOSA railway marking; and Due markings '20 BANI' and '28 BANI'. A nice starter lot for this interesting collecting area. 5625 cover image1858 (Nov 5): Entire letter written on November 3rd, sent registered from Jassy to Galatz, franked by fine margined 80 pa. red on white paper tied by bold strike of "Jassy / Moldova" datestamp (Kiriac fig. 279) in blue (5/11) leaving the break in the outer frame line clear. Straight line italic "RECEPISSE" handstamp above with registration number 1351. A superb and rare early usage of this issue and for many years this famous cover was believed the earliest known: now, however the second earliest cover known (see Corinphila sale 161, lot 2403 for the earlier cover). Exhibition item of great significance. Illustrated in Heimbüchler I, page 171 and Edition d'Or volume XII on page 68. Signed Friedl and Heimbüchler.
