Included in the assembly are; two 1840 1 d. black covers both with red Maltese Cross cancellations; 1841 1 d. red four margin example tied to cover by the distinctive Norwich Maltese Cross; two covers franked with 1841 1 d. red tied by London Number "5" and "8" respectively both have four margins; a fine looking four margin 1841 1 d. red in a deep shade tied to attractive cover by very fine black Maltese Cross sent from Cirencester to Cheltenham and has an embossed 'Cheltenham & Great Western Railway' yellow waffer seal to back; a fine used 1844 1 d. red tied to cover by blue English numeral "370" of Holbeach sent to Folkingham. The group of stamps consists of; an 1840 1 d. grey-black horizontal pair with four margins lettered AF-AG (pin hole to AG); 1844 1 d. red horizontal strip of four lettered FD-FG four margins but some vertical creasing and small scissor cut into vertical margin and a 1857 1 d. rose-red perf. 16 large crown wmk. cancelled by a Scottish local "CHARLOTTE / PLACE" boxed postmark in black. 5024 cover imageNiger Coast Protectorate Oil Rivers 1892: Postal Stationery Card, 1 d. vermilion, used from Catford (London) to Kirkburton, Huddersfield, England, dated 26 September 1913, cancelled by "CATFORD S.O.S.E" double circle datestamp in black. Very late use and scarce usage of the Oil Rivers stationery within Great Britain (H&G 2). Has a very interesting message on reverse which reads: "I am posting this card to you as a curiosity. It was one of a large number bought at the Post Office on the African coast by an officer in the merchant service, who thought they would acquire a high value from a philatelist's point of view. They did not so he kept them by him until his death when his exor tried to get face value refunded. They were out of date for this but the Post Office admit that they can still be used as postage stamps." Late Fee, accordingly handstamped "INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED", "2" in manuscript at upper left denoting second weight class, the cover therefore short 3d. postage and 3d. penalty, but 2d. credit applied for the unused Late Fee service, thus manuscript "4" (pence) or "20" (cents) due notations, reverse with Amsterdam arrival cds (7 Sept), a fascinating cover(Image 1) (Image 2)
