4501 cover imageHouses of Parliament 2 d. envelope 1840: "To be posted at the Houses of Parliament only / Post Paid.- Two-pence. Weight not to exceed 1 oz.", a fine used example of the 2 d. envelope on laid paper, wmk. Britannia in crowned oval, mailed and signed at lower left by 'C. P. Villiers' and addresssed to Richard Cobden in Manchester, struck by 'Crown / Paid' datestamp (Feb 6) in red. Tiny opening tear at base but of great rarity and historical interest, there being but 12 used covers / fronts of covers recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index, of which three are housed in institutional collections Gi = £ 45'000. Note: The sender, Charles Pelham Villiers (1802-1898), was MP for Wolverhampton and the longest serving MP in Great Britain's history (1835-1898). He was leader of the Anti-Corn Law League and it's most prominent supporter along with John Bright and Richard Cobden until the successful repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. The addressee, Richard Cobden (1804-1865) was yet to become an MP, being elected in 1841, he too was a passionate advocate of both Free Trade and, in consequence, the Anti-Corn Law League. Ironed out vertical file fold through the adhesive and sensible small repairs to the part letter sheet, one flap missing and restored lower left corner and centrally within address, but a rare and very early usage. 4506 cover image1840: 2 d. blue, Plate 2, lettered RG-RH, a used horizontal pair with large margins all round and showing portions of adjoining stamps at top and at left, used on quadruple weight 1842 cover to Blandford, tied by DORCHESTER double arc datestamps (June 23, 1842) in black. The fine pair of fresh colour with RH showing the constant variety with coloured "v" in NW corner unobscured by the rare cancellation, the letter mentioning enclosures. Reverse with Blandford arrival datestamp in black. Just one other 1840 2 d. blue pair on cover cancelled by Wessex town datestamps is recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index (lettered NH-NI) which is heavily repaired. An extraordinarily rare and attractive cover, an Exhibition item of the highest calibre for the connoisseur of classic Great Britain. Cert. RPSL (1970) Gi DS8xb+DS8xbe = £ 28'000+. 4507 cover/bof image1840: 2 d. blue, Plate 2, lettered QJ-QL / RK-RL, an irregular block of five with close (QJ) to large margins all round, of fine fresh colour, tied to 1842 cover from Norwich to Saxmundham by five strikes of the Maltese Cross in black. The cover with ironed file fold through the block and the somewhat heavy cancellation fingerprint marks reduced on QJ-QK, stamp QL showing the re-entry at top. Reverse with italic "Too Late" in black and fine "Norwich" double arc cds (Jan 22) alongside Saxmundham cds (Jan 24). Rare - the third largest block from Plate 2 recorded on cover in the Karl Louis Card Index.
