3617 cover image1859: 6 d. golden bronze, imperforate, a used example (Type 1) with large if uneven margins all round, used on 1859 cover endorsed "via Southampton" to London, tied by Bowra circle and bars numeral "8" obliterator in black with corresponding "FREEMANTLE / WESTERN-AUSTRALIA" double arc datestamp of despatch at left (July 15) in black. Carried on P&O Line on the "Northam" to Port Louis (Mauritius) and Suez (Aug 28) and from Alexandria on the "Ceylon" to Southampton with "London / Paid" cds in red (Sept 19). Readdressed upon arrival to Maidenhead, Bucks (Sept 20) with arrival on reverse. Two file folds well away from the adhesive, a fine and very rare cover. Provenance: Collection G.H. 3628 (*) imageProofs produced in Western Australia 1860 (May): Colour Proofs requested by the Agent General for the Crown Colonies after the Perkins Bacon Proofs were despatched in April 1860; Imperforate examples in ungummed unwatermarked paper with 2 d. in deep blue (marginal at base), 4 d. in rose, 6 d. in violet and a horizontal pair in a much paler mauve shade and the 1 s. in very deep green. Fresh and very fine. Note: The requested Proofs were 2 d. "Blue as English"; 4 d. "Carmine as English", 6 d. "Violet i.e. colour of English 6 d. stamp" and 1 s. "Green as English". Local printings later in the same year were in diffeerent colours altogether, the 1 s. plate was not used as adequate stocks remained of the 1855 1 shilling(Image 1)
