2803 cover image1876: 5 sh. black & rose on buff postal stationery envelope, used on 1876 cover from Gustave von Riederer, the Director of Posts to a postal official in Linz, Austria, lightly cancelled at Teheran on despatch; additionally franked for onward transmission by Russia 1875 8 kop. red & grey on horizontally laid paper (Scott 28) tied at the Russian border Post Office in DJULFA (Dec 27). Reverse with two Tabriz transit cds's further DJULFA cds, Moscow cds, Vienna cds and Linz arrival cds (Jan 25, 1876g). Edge wear to envelope and some minor ageing of no significance, very few known mixed frankings with postal stationery are recorded: a damaged example in the Brigadier Lewis (Oct 1979) collection, and a front to Constantinople in Robson Lowe's Nov 1982 sale - all appear to be sent as New Year's greetings to Postal Officials or Philatelic Dealers; one of the finest known examples of this franking - an outstanding a rare combination cover. 2805 (*) image1882: Hand-painted display panel prepared after Persia's acceptance in the Universal Postal Union, membership being adopted on 1 June 1878 at the Paris Convention. This example with Nasr ed-Din Shah Qajar 1881/82 values at top, 1879/80 definitives and, below these, 1876 5 ch. and four Barre perforated Essays for the first issue. Datestamped at base in Teheran (April 2). Just three panels are believed to be in existence, each being slightly different and probably given to high Postal Officials only as the frame-work painting at top is both meticulous and outstandingly beautiful. The cover with Teheran cds in black - where stopped by the Post Office and obverse with manuscript "Envelope must be confiscated" as the usage of Castaign's issue was not authorised even though he was Postmaster of Khorassan province. 2816 cover image1902 (Jan): Typset 5 ch. red on buff, imperforate, overprinted rectangular PROVISOIRE / 1319 in black, a single example with large margins all round, marginal from right of sheet, used on reverse of 1902 cover with original contents to Yazd via Teheran (April 20) tied by MECHED cds in black (April 17). Yazd arrival cds on obverse (April 28). A fine and very scarce usage with just 15 internal usages of this stamp on letter recorded.
