5007 cover image1892: Postal Stationery Card, 1½ d. red-brown, surcharged by manuscript red ink to reduce to 1 d. by deleting "HALFPENNY", used from Lagos to Cameroon, dated 8 September 1892, endorsed "Woermann Line" (German steamer) and also "Postlagernd" (to be collected), cancelled by "LAGOS / W. AFRICA" cds in black, with "KAMERUN" arrival also in black dated 12 December 1892. Corner crease lower left and minor rubs to both sides which are not obvious and do not detract. Rare early example. Mail to Cameroon is also not common. Cert RPSL (2017) which states "..red ink matches the ink on postally used cards with deletion applied after the obliteration.." and "...is not an official issue." Note: Notwithstanding the RPSL opinion, the author of the definitive book on Nigerian postal stationery; published by RPSL (2023), states; "Even though a lot of questions about these cards have been raised, it still seems plausible that manuscript surcharges were indeed issued, at least for the single cards." A fine and rare card. Cert RPSL (2017) which states "..red ink matches the ink on postally used cards with deletion applied after the obliteration.." and "...is not an official issue."
