2134 imageIncoming from Austria 1862: Unpaid cover from Trieste to Calamata, endorsed "Col Vapore", struck by TRIEST despatch (July 19) cds, on arrival charged '75' lepta in red crayon and franked with 1861 Paris Printing 5 l. yellow-green and 40 l. mauve on blue in combination with 1861/62 First Athens printing 10 l. orange and 20 l. blue, a fine four-colour franking with fresh colour and good to large margins, all tied by '31' numeral of Kalmata, reverse with ATHENS transit cds. The Austrian debited the Greek postal administration "3 / 15" soldi in manuscript, for the local Trieste rate and the Lloyd' shipmail, respectively, the resulting 55 lepta plus the 20 lepta inland rate were charged to the receiver. Unfranked letter at 85 lepta minus 5 kreuzer = 15 lepta, charged 70 lepta to pay. Upon arrival charged with '20' lepta in red crayon. Consecutive Athens printing 1862/67 20 l. blue applied and tied by '67' numeral of Syros, matching arrival cds (Dec 25, 1862) on reverse. The adhesive lightly touched at top, nevertheless an interesting and appealing cover with partial prepayment in cash from the period, when Greek adhesives were already in use while the Austrian Levant offices did not yet use adhesives. Charged upon arrival with '90' lepta in red crayon, bearing 1862/67 Consecutive Athens printing 10 l. yellow-orange and 80 l. rose-carmine, vivid colours with overall fair to large margins, tied by ATHENS arrival cds (June 8) cds. File fold through the 10 lepta adhesive, also lightly touched at right, nevertheless an interesting cover from an extremely rare provenance for Greece, presumably unique. Cert. Sorani (2007) Hellas 18a+22a.rnNote: With Italian vessels from Tunis to Cagliari and further to Palermo and Messina. There the cover was transfered to a French vessel to Athens.
