Carried from Bombay on P&O steamer "Mongolia" via Aden to Suez, with oxidised "Paq. Angl. / Alexandrie" transit datestamps on obverse (Oct 2) in red and reverse with arrival cds (Oct 12). 576 imageMahê 1872/77: General Issue Cêrès 10 c. brown on rose, a horizontal pair, margins shaved to fine, used on 1879 Formula card to Bordeaux tied by "INDE / MAHÉ" cds (Jan 2) and carried to Bombay to connect with the P&O "Sumatra" via Aden to Suez (Jan 18). From Alexandria, carried on the "Ceylon" to Brindisi and thence by rail with Bordeaux arrival (Jan 26) on reverse. An unusual usage from this small Settlement. Cert. RPSL (2009). Baudry & Cia. / Mahe / Malabar Coast" at left. Mailed via Tellicherry with double arc datestamp on reverse in red (Nov 3) and thence to Madras where mailed via the French steamer "Meinam", and from Galle aboard the "Cambodge" to Suez. MAHE despatch cds in red below (Oct 24), the franking correct for a ½ ounce cover for Britain but overpaid 1½ annas for France. Carried on P&O "Peshawur" fron Bombay to Suez with "Poss Angl. V. 579 imageYanam 1881: French General Issues 5 c. green on greenish and 20 c. brick-red on green used on 1887 mourning envelope from Rêunion addressed to the small French Settlement of Yanam, tied by St. Denis cds's in blue. Octagonal "Col. Fr. / Paq. Fr. T No. 4" in red and carried on the steamer "Sydney" to Mahê. Readdressed from Yanam to Ste. Marie, Madagascar but addressee again unfound and the cover mailed on again to Pondichery. At least eleven different cancellations, an extraordinary cover. (Image 1) (Image 2)

496 1858 (July 7): Eightfold rate cover from Constantinople to Paris, bearing five examples of 1854 Napolèon imperforated 80 c. carmine with overall fair to good margins (two defective), bearing indistinct Anchor grill with boxed PD, ship's CARMEL cds and boxed "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITARRANÉE" handstamp in red alongside. Reverse with MARSEILLE transit and PARIS arrival (July 15) cds's. Cover with part of the addressee's name cut out and restored, some edge wear, nevertheless a most interesting Shipmail cover.

X No 2" despatch datestamp (Salles fig. 908) and framed PD, both in black as well as framed "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITERANÉE" in red alongside. Reverse struck with arrival cds (Jan 11). A most appealing Shipmail usage on the vessel 'Menzaleh' from Alexandrette / Iskenderun in Hatay, the franking paying correctly the new rate of 80 c. from the Levant, increased in January 1871. Reverse with indistinct arrival cds. Part of backflap missing, nevertheless an appealing four-colour franking from the French PO in Alexandria correctly paying three times 50 centimes. Cert. 3201 imageFrench Post Offices in the Levant 1873 (March 23): Cover from Aleppo via Alexandretta to Marseille, bearing on reverse 1870 Dulos definitives 20 pa. green and 1 pi. yellow (Mi 14B,15B) for the part of the journey to the harbour of Alexandretta, tied by triple framed all-Arabic handstamps. In the French consular P.O. in Alexandretta, a Cêrès 80 c. rosa was applied to the obverse, tied by clear Gros Chiffres '5079' numeral lozenge with matching cogwheel "ALEXANDRETTE SYRIE 23 MARS 73" despatch cds and framed PD in black as well as framed "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITERRANÉE" in red alongside.
