Russia Issue Wrangel Army
Lot Symbol Catalog No. Descrip Opening
7110 on cover 323 image1921, Russian exile Army, cover from Gallipoli to Constantinople, franked with 10000r on 4k carmine Imperial stamp (Scott 100, Michel 76), bearing a black Ukrainian Trident overprint and later surcharged by the Wrangel postal administration in exile with the ornate blue 10000r overprint, tied by clear blue circular ГАЛИПОЛИ / 31.III.1921 (Gallipoli) cancel, reverse with neat Russian Post Constantinople arrival mark dated 2 AVR 1921, the stamp shows a minor perforation flaw at the corner perf at top left which is not of high relevane, otherwise an unusual and attractive postal usage of a mixed-overprint stamp during the post-revolutionary Russian émigré period, the dual overprint (first Ukrainian, then Wrangel) reflects the chaotic re-use of philatelic stock in the refugee camps of the White Army in exile, the entire is well preserved with good color and clear markings, the letter was transported by the Marmara sea, across the Dardanelles, on a civilian or French-controlled vessel, as was typical for mail from the Russian military refugee camp in Gallipoli to Constantinople, this mode of transport was standard due to the lack of organized overland postal infrastructure during the White Army's exile in Turkey, a rare combination and an excellent example of Wrangel Army field post from Gallipoli., VF-XF!
