279 imageChina. China block 1941 Manchukuo post savings mark n Y T 1 charniere carp Scott MA 111 MNH China issued March 1, 1941, these stamps were used as post office savings stamps and could not be used for postal purposes. Unlike in Japan, where savings stamps could be used for both savings and mail, these were strictly for savings. Postal savings remained popular in rural areas without easy bank access and were also used to encourage children to save. The characters on the stamp read "One chiao (10f)" at the top and "Postal Savings Stamp" at the bottom. The stamp was photogravure printed on unwatermarked paper in sheets of 100, with the back coated in a whitish rubber. The 12-character inscription reads "Made by the Japanese Imperial Printing Bureau," with the designer unknown. The design features two carp in a bowl with a pearl in the center, symbolizing good luck. The Chinese word for fish, "Yu," sounds the same as the word for abundance, creating a wordplay. The carp is also known as the "messenger" fish, aligning with the theme of mail.(Image 1) (Image 2)
