1900, 20 October, USA, Railway accident, stationery envelope Washington 2c. pink used from "Omaha, Nebr., 16.10. with ms. endorsement "Damaged by water Mail car and baggage car fell in river at Eddy, 6 miles west of Missoula a ton of mail went in river. Mont 10-20-00 West bound N.P. with home seekers" on front. The 1st section of westbound train no.3 was knocked out of the rails due to a boulder slide. All mail and baggage cars and the engine were piled up in a heap across the tracks.

Two covers to London resp. to Hamburg/Germany, both bearing ms. endorsement "Damaged in Railway accident" resp. "Damaged by water in Madras Mail Train smash of 11 Sep '02"+boxed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION IN XXX WATER" ("SEA" before "WATER" blocked out, correctly), and both with arrival marks 29.9.02.

The accident took place about 9.20 p.m., the train no. 26 with engine no. 4686 and five cars (thereof four sleeping cars) was travelling at full speed, 60-70 mph, when it hit an open switch at Mentor station and derailed. It was telescoped, and coals from the fire box immediately ignited the baggage/buffet car behind the engine.

1908, 27 May, Canada, Railway accident at Paquette Dam, stationery envelope 2c. from Craik, Saskatchewan 23.5.08 to Dorking, England, with straight line "DAMAGED IN A WRY WRECK" on reverse. Shortly before midnight on 27 May a wave of 200 million cubic feet of water, 20 foot high, began surging down the Current River Valley. The Paquette Dam collapsed, leaving a 150 yard break and washing away the ballast on the approach to the Canadian Pacific Railway bridge. Five were killed, incl. the three train crew, when the train left the tracks and plunged into the swollen Current River. The Paquette Dam was never rebuilt.

1910, 28 July, Fire in Postal Railroadcars, Mexico-France-Germany, postal card from Mexico 15.7.10 to Cologne/Germany, with ms. endorsement "Gerettet aus verbrannter Amerikapost vom Dampfer La Lorraine via Havre am 28.7.10." (Saved from burnt mail from America originating from steamer La Lorraine via Havre 28.7.10). German officials erroneously stated the damage to be caused by a naval accident; however the mail went ashore intact and this cover was recovered from the French railway car which had burned at Pont St.Marene station (France) on 28 July 1910.

1910, 21 December, USA, Railway accident at Chicago, Ill., two ppc with scorch marks and straight lines "Damaged by Fire Pitts.&Ohi. /R.P.O. Chicago Yards, Dc. 21st" resp. "Delayed In Wreck / PITTS.&CHI.TR 16 /At Chicago DEC 21'10". Crossing an open switch, a locomotive crashed into the tender of the eastbound Pittsburgh&Chicago's fast passenger train no. 16 at 57th street, Chicago, Ill. The wreck overturned the train's tender, a RPO car and baggage car. The locomotive's boiler exploded and the resultant fire burned the railway cars that had overturned. Local firefighters were summonded, they fought the blaze until it was finally extinguished.

Spring & N Y RPO tr 53 at Westport Conn October 3 1912. The damage is regretted. Postmaster Boston Mass". Trying to make up lost time and travelling at 60 mph, the Springfield express jumped off the rails when attempting to cross from outside to inside track. The gas tank and boiler exploded, setting fire to the parlor car, and then spreading to others. Seven persons were killed.

In the morning hours of 20 May 1913, a fire broke out in the baggage room of Santa Fe Railroad depot at Meced, Cal., which destroyed virtually all of the stored mail, only a few items out of the middle of the bundles could be saved in a reasonably readable condition.

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy passenger train no. 30 left Casper, Wyo., on time at 8.35 p.m., when it reached 15 miles east the bridge near Lockett spanning over the Coal Creek. The bridge had been undermined by high waters due to heavy enduring rainfall, and just collapsed under the train; several cars fell into the river. Forty persons were killed.

1923, 11 October, Train Raid, USA, heavily burnt fragment of cover and related P.O. label "This mail damaged by fire and dynamite in hold-up of Ashland & Gerber Tran No. 13, at Siskiyou, Oregon, October 11, 1923." This raid was conducted by the DeAutremont Brothers, was unsuccessfull but cost the life of four crewmen. After a nationwide manhunt, they were finally arrested in 1927.
