Lower left signature "GA M.B Worms"of Maurice Benedict de Worms (1805-1867), fabled as the "developer of Ceylon" brought the first tea seedlings together with his brother Gabriel from China in September 1841, and founded a nursery on his estate at Pusellawa. The signatory was a relative of Baron Anthony de Worms (1869 - 1938), one of the greatest students of Ceylon philately. In the foreword to Harmers' 1938 auction catalogue for the Baron's collection, it was stated he received important stamps "from uncles on the family coffee estates in Ceylon". 1895: "Double cash franking from German Samoa with US postage to China":

"APIA KAISERL. DEUTSCHE POSTAGENTUR 2.1.95" clear cancellation next to red cash franking mark "5 Cts. Paid" on a cover to a sailor on the SMS "Arkona" to China with 5 Cts. US postage in San Francisco. On the reverse handwritten sender information from a senior sailor on the German warship SMS "Falke". The letter was sent via San Francisco to the American post office in Shanghai (24.2.95) and then to the Chinese local post office in Shanghai (25.2.95). The letter could not be delivered in Shanghai and was handed over to the local post office Chefoo (28.2.95) with a handwritten forwarding note "Chefoo" and from there sent to the SMS "Arkona". The domestic Chinese transport was also charged in cash. Cash franking in US currency only took place in Apia on December 5, 1894 and January 2, 1895. With subsequent franking of a US stamp, only this one document is known and in connection with the double cash franking, it is UNIQUE and ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COVERS OF THE ENTIRE SOUTH SEA PHILATELY.

(This cover is shown in the Dr. Steuer handbook on page 422 and was sold in the 1st Bredeney auction of the Württemberg auction house on June 9, 2018 for €38,500 including premium.) ÷ 1895: "Doppelte Barfrankierung aus Deutsch-Samoa mit US-Nachfrankierung nach China":

"APIA KAISERL. DEUTSCHE POSTAGENTUR 2.1.95" klarer Abschlag neben rotem Barfrankierungsvermerk "5 Cts. USA-Nachfrankatur in San Francisco.
Aufgeld verkauft.)
