548 image1957 accumulation of local covers (60), each bearing various QEII frankings and addressed to William Stepney, c/o The Wholesale Society, Tarawa and tied various island postmarks. Some include the typed letters, detailing the conditions prevailing on the islands, ranging from 'A most difficult island on which to land' (Tabiteuea), 'This store was in a shocking condition' (Nukulaelae) and 'Next to Vaitupu, this is one of the neatest and best organised Fusi of the lot' (Nui). A most unusual group, illustrating life and colonial administration in the islands in the 1950's, with many attractive multi-frankings and postmarks. Also a group of letters & documents. (Image)
