In the text: "Witepsk this August 13... I left WITEPSK and arrived in BABINOWICZI... I have just passed DNIEPER, 40 fathoms wide... from a village in front of Lady on the road to SMOLENSK on August 14, I arrived here at 2 o'clock and joined the Emperor... tomorrow we will set out for Smolensk... of the same village on August 15, our cavalry took last night from the Russians 15 pieces of cannon and 1500 men, Marboeuf had his leg caught by a bullet, we hope that we will not be obliged to cut it off from him... It seems that the Russians have evacuated Smolensk." On 14 August, the French forces under the command of Murat, Davout and Ney crossed the Dnieper River to head for Smolensk. After driving out two regiments of Cossacks, Grouchy entered Liady, on 15 August the 3rd Corps repulsed Newerowski's division which retreated to SMOLENSK.
