897 og 0 imageIn the eighteenth century, ships were the quickest, and often the only, means of transport for transporting goods between continents. It was in this context that the maritime mail was born, responsible for ensuring the delivery of mail by sea, mainly on board commercial ships. At that time, it was common for postal agents to board these ships in order to cancel the letters entrusted to them. The first maritime mail marks appeared at the end of the eighteenth century in the form of linear postmarks. From the 1830s, date stamps were introduced. Between 1857 and 1876, postage stamps were cancelled with a diamond-shaped stamp of dots, in the centre of which is an anchor ("anchor" cancellation). These cancellations are available in several colors: black, blue and red. From 1876 onwards, postage stamps were cancelled exclusively by means of a date stamp. In general, the brands of the maritime mail are many and varied. Their diversity makes their collection complex, but also exciting for lovers of maritime philately. (Image)
