I have just passed DNIEPER, 40 fathoms wide... from a village in front of Lady on the road to SMOLENSK on August 14, I arrived here at 2 o'clock and joined the Emperor... tomorrow we will set out for Smolensk... of the same village on August 15, our cavalry took last night from the Russians 15 pieces of cannon and 1500 men, Marboeuf had his leg caught by a bullet, we hope that we will not be obliged to cut it off from him... It seems that the Russians have evacuated Smolensk." On 14 August, the French forces under the command of Murat, Davout and Ney crossed the Dnieper River to head for Smolensk. In the text: "In front of Smolensk on August 18, I went to the Emperor's tent where I learned that the Russians had evacuated the city, we mounted our horses at 10 a.m. and stayed until 10 o'clock in the evening to walk the battlefield, to examine the Russians who are still on the heights on the other side of the Dnieper, we cannonaded and pulled each other all day... in front of SMOLENSK on August 19, I was sent to General Eblé who built 2 bridges... and was reImperforatere account to the Emperor 1 league away on the road to Moscow, the 3rd Corps and the King of Naples are pursuing the Russians and had a fine fight." After the battle of Smolensk the Russians withdrew to Valutino where they were attacked and put to flight by Murat and Ney. Letter written in part from Moscow. In the text: "MOSCOW, September 16, 1812, Tuesday 1 3/4 p.m. This fire that has taken hold is a terrible thing... it seems that the Russians have put it on purpose. We arrested several of them... Moscow, this September 16 at 8 p.m. ... it took me a long time to get to the Palais de Crémelin, where the Emperor lived... My carriage is a morning person: I have just broken my watch-glass... I am going to mount my horse to seek the Emperor's lodgings to preImperforatere my service. At the castle of Petrowisky, 1 league from Moscow, September 17, 1812, Thursday 5 1/2 p.m. It is a very beautiful castle of the Emperor of Russia... I passed a fur to a page... I dined at the palace (Kremlin), our dining room was that of the Russian imperial feasts... The remnants of the Russian army have retreated to Kaluga...". On September 14, the GraImperforatee Army entered Moscow, which the Russian army evacuated by setting fire to the city, which ravaged the city until September 20, when nine-tenths of the city was in this Imperforateres.
