Brigham Auctions Ltd. Sale - 7

Edward VII, 1903-1911 - January 23, 2016

Part VIII offers the Edward VII collection which is the first 20th Century issue of Canada to receive an International Large Gold medal. In fact, it has received three and the collection is qualified for a future Grand Prix d’Honneur competition.

Probably the greatest Edward VII collection ever assembled. It is replete with unique items such as the 1901 Composite Essay Presentation Panel which debunks the long held belief that the Post Office had no intention of issuing new stamps until the contract ran out with the printer in 1903. There is also a most extensive collection of die essays from the British Security printers for this issue. A vast array of plate number strips and blocks and misperforated varieties can be found in the auction’s 304 Edward VII lots. The experimental coil sections shows items from every type. The booklet section offers three complete tête-bêche booklet panes of six including one (left hand side) of two recorded plate number blocks and one (right hand side) of two recorded bottom margin blocks.

The postal history portion unveils covers with a myriad of different rates and unusual destinations (e.g.: Canal Zone, Cape of Good Hope, Ceylon, China, Finland, Jamaica, Japan, Malta, Martinique, Siam, Sierra Leone, Tasmania and Turkey). Many of the lower values are found on illuminated and colourful advertising covers. The high values show unusual frankings and contain two of the eight known 50¢ frankings.

Part IX is a continuation of Part VII from our previous auction and features some of the holdings and rarities of the Queen Elizabeth II Era of The Brigham Collection. Here you can find hard to get hard to find imperforates, stunning misperfs, missing colours, Repellex errors and printed on gum side errors. A few older full sheets join Elizabethan full sheets in this section.
