Brigham Auctions Ltd. Sale - 5

King George V, Edward VIII & George VI Issues, 1917-1953 - June 13, 2015

These pages contain the smallest sale we have so far put together. It covers the reigns of King George V (minus the Admirals which were in our previous sale), Edward VIII and King George VI (1917-1953).

During this 35-year period there were ten definitive issues and more than twenty commemorative series featuring Kings George V and VI. The emphasis in the building of The Brigham Collection for these issues was put on the important pre-production material, printing and plate varieties and plate number blocks. As no stamps were issued during the reign of Edward VI there are but two lots for this king (333-334). No collection of Canada is complete without a representation of this reign. The paucity of King Edward VIII pre-production material is due to the Post Office Department’s insistence that all work, including die proofs, be destroyed.

Like the Admirals, only a portion of this collection was mounted. As a result, this material was never displayed at philatelic shows and therefore has not been on the market for many years. Many of the items are unique or difficult to acquire. Some of the varieties are in rare positional blocks. This is also the period where the Post Office Department made available full imperforates, vertical imperforates and horizontal ones. The Brigham Collection contains a vast number of these including unique positional plate blocks. For example, lot 73 features a unique vertical imperforate pair with the popular 50¢ Bluenose ‘Man-in-the-Mast‘ variety.

Apart from the 1897 Queen Victoria Jubilee issue this is the only period of Canadian philately that does not have its own handbook.

This sale is an opportunity for collectors of these issues/reigns to acquire much of the elusive material they need to improve or complete their collection.

Please note lots containing 8+ items are sold as-is and are not eligible for return.
