1032 piece image1932 (10 Mar) a cover piece f.w. 700th Anniv of the Death of St. Antonius 20c, tied by Italian minelayer Lepanto “R.C.T. ESPERO” seal., alongside with “NAVE / ESPERO” cds.Lepanto was in Italian service in the far east until 1943, when she was scuttled in China, during World War II. She was then recovered by the Imperial Japanese Navy and taken into service as Okitsu. She was surrendered to the Republic of China after the end of the war and served for a further ten years with its navy as the Hsien Ning.

1932.3.10 一件貼有St. Antonius逝世七百週年20分之剪片，銷意大利佈雷船Lepanto號“R.C.T. ESPERO”圓戳，旁鈐另一款“NAVE / ESPERO”日戳。Lepanto號一直為意軍戰艦，直至1943年在中國鑿沈，後又被日軍收編為興津號。二戰後向民國投降，收編為咸寧艦。(Image 1)

1039 image1938 65th Infantry Division “Granatieri di Savoia” from Shanghai to Genova, f.w. Famous Artists 2.75lr, tied by scarce “REGIE POSTE / COMANDO / 10o REGGIMENTO GRANATIERI DI SAVOIA” oval seal. Arrived Genova (25 Apr). During the Second Sino-Japanese War Italy dispatched the I Grenadier Battalion of the 10th Regiment to China on 23 August 1937 to help guard the Shanghai International Settlement during the Battle of Shanghai. The battalion returned to Addis Ababa on 28 December 1938.

Forwarded to returned letter office (26 Nov). On front with “DETAINED IN HONGKONGBY JAPANESE FROM DECEMBER 1941 TO SEPTEMBER 1945” cachet. Very scarce incoming and returned but detained example.

KGVI 15c in pair, tied by Hong Kong cds., alongside with “NOT OPENED BY CENSOR”, “RETOUR” and “DETAINED IN HONGKONG BY JAPANESE FROM DECEMBER 1941 TO SEPTEMBER 1945” cachet. On reverse with "China Looks to Us!" Cinderella stamp x3. Delivered after WWII and arrived USA on 16 Oct 1945. Detained mails with arrival cds are much rarer than those without as many detained mails were kept by the PO staff after the war.
