2547 image1955 Phari (19 Jun) to India, f.w. C13 (4-1) $400 for Tibet to India letter rate. Transit Yatung (24 Jun). Arrived Kalimpong (27 Jun). Tibet-to-India letter rate was same as Indian domestic rate 2a before the effect of Sino-Indian postal convention 1955. Given fluctuation of exchange rate, $450, $400 and $500 postage was seen. It is a very late example of $400 rate. Illustration fig 24, p. 395 in “Tibet Stamps and Postal History” by S Chazen and D. Wong.

This earliest cover using new rate preceded previous record by 13 days!

REPUBLIEK 2-1/2 d, 1x ½ d, 1x 1-penny, all six stamps were cancelled by three long-sized registered box in black "R/GEREGISTREERD PRETORIA ZA.R./2 ΜΕΙ 98", adjacent to that, cancelled by oval UK registered mark "REGISTERED LONDON/20 MY/98", numeral handstamp "2385", On the reverse side, cancelled by partial HK transit c.d.s. dated JUNE 23, 98. ZA.R. (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) was formerly known as South African Republic, an independent Boer-ruled republic in Southern Africa during the 19th century. It existed from 1852 to 1902, until it was annexed by the British Empire following the Second Anglo-Boer War. Pretoria is the administrative capital of S.A. today.

The Yokohama Agency was kept open until the end of 1875 because of problems with Hong Kong postal officials refusing to accept U.S. mail in the Japanese post. Japan started its own foreign mail service on 1 Jan 1875.
