1575 cover image1864 (Oct 14) a letter franked with HK QV 48c (unwmk.) and 6c (wmk.) addressed to Rob. S. Sturgis Esq. Boston USA, cancelled by "B62" in blue color, red crayon manuscript rate 21/½(d), 1(d), red handstamp 5 CENTS, red c.d.s. "BOSTON BR. PKT. PAID / DEC 14", black oval FAC "FORWARDED BY RUSSELL & Co. HONG KONG". On the reverse, cancelled by another FAC "FORWARDED BY * BOSTON * H.P. STURGIS & Co.", oval datestamp "RECEIVED / DEC 15 / 1864 / H. P. S.", blue Hong Kong c.d.s. dated 14 OCT 1864. The two stamps of 54c overpaid by 1c which is normal due to difficult combination of stamps available. This is an extremely fine quality entire with two FAC cancellations, i.e. RUSSELL and H.P. STURGIS. Rare combination cover.

1585 cover image1897 (23 June), a red band cover sent from Hong Kong to France, franked with HK QV 3 x 2c and 1 x 4c (total 10c postage), both tied by 3 French octagonal “LIGNE N PAQ. FR. No.9” and one more French Ligne N cancellation adjacent. On the reverse, three transit and arrival c.d.s. A very good quality cover with not often seen HK QV cover directly cancelled by French Ligne c.d.s. The mail was posted on board “S.S. Natal”, thought to be unique. Provenance: J. Riddell (March 1974) Ryohei Ishikawa (Dec 1980)

1588 cover image1899 Hong Kong (27 Nov) to USA, f.w. Hong Kong QV 10c for UPU rate, tied by Hong Kong index C cds. Transit San Francisco (18 Dec). Arrived Wayne (3 Jan). Although Hong Kong joined Penny Post Scheme in Dec 1898, USA did not belong to it and therefore sticked to UPU 10c rate.

2034 cover image1864 (16 Aug) an entire letter from Foochow to New York via French MI delivery, endorsed “P. Messageries Imperials str. (steamer)”, franked with HK QV 1862 24c green and 1863-71 30c vermilion, tied by “B62” obliterator in blue, manuscript rate mark “ 2/ 1½ ” in red crayon, London Paid c.d.s. (7 Oct), New York local charge “5 CENTS” accountancy mark h.s. and “PAID” h.s. in red oily shading. The flap with 2 strikes of HK c.d.s. (23 Aug); the contents give some details of trade situations in Foochow. A very good early stamped mail from Foochow before the introduction of Foochowfoo c.d.s. in 1867. The mail was carried by French MI steamer “Imperatice” and “Peluse” to Marseilles which further taken forward to New York via London. A seldom seen Foochow mail stamped with HK QV stamps in use of French MI packet steamers.

1864.8.16 福州經法國郵船寄美國，貼香港票24仙 + 30仙，銷B62殺手戳。內容有關福州。為福州府英局日戳引進前之例子。此信由Imperatice及Peluse送至馬賽。福州寄出，貼香港票但經法國篨船寄出之難得例子。(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

2046 cover image1865 (15 Jan) an entire sheet sent from Hong Kong to Saigon via Singapore, franked with HK QV 8c yellow and a pair of 6c at the bottom left-hand corner, all of which were cancelled by “B62” obliterator. On the obverse side, a manuscript rate ‘4” matching the HK QV 8c B.P.O. postage fee to Saigon, together with a forwarder oval mark “WM. PUSTAU / HONGKONG” underneath the pair of HK QV 6c. The 12c rate represented the Late Fee paid for this mail. On the flap, a French packet double-circled “LA BOURDONNAIS / 24 JANV 65”, Hong Kong c.d.s., and a double-circled Singapore c.d.s. This entire sheet is illustrated in Lee Scamp’s French Mail Paquebot Far East Itineraries page 60, in which it is stated that the mail being carried by P&O Carnatic from Hong Kong to Singapore, and then picked up by French packet steamer La Bourdonnais M.I. carried from Singapore to Saigon. An excellent mail represents an unusually complex mix of both French and British packet routing, and even more so adding the Late Fee paid feature. An extremely unique postal history item. Provenance: (1) T.V. Roberts auction lot 464, Sotheby’s, Oct 1982 (2) Illustrated in Lee Scamp’s French Mail Paquebot Far East Itineraries page 60.
