Burnside's 9th Division

Cover addressed by Lt. Richard H. Jackson, Company H, 9th New York Volunteer Infantry (Hawkins Zouaves), serving with Burnside’s 9th Corps, 7th Brigade, 3rd Division, Washington, D.C., with receiving notation “Rec’d Feb. 11, 1863, Newport News.” Lieutenant Jackson enlisted in May 1861 and served throughout major Army of the Potomac campaigns, including Antietam and Fredericksburg. The 9th New York Zouaves were among the most recognized Union regiments of the war, noted for their distinctive uniforms and battlefield service. Black NORTH BRIDGEWATER MS. JAN 5 circular datestamp, addressed to Lt. Samuel F. Edwards, Co. D, 52nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, at Banks Expedition, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The cover is reduced at right and shows period docketing on the reverse, “Received Jan. 18th.” This cover traveled with the Union forces under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks during the early phase of the Banks Expedition, organized in late 1862 to support General Grant’s operations along the Mississippi River. Banks Expedition, Lousiana

Stamps canceled with black oval “PAID" handstamp, the cover postmarked by red Boston, Mass. Jan 8 double-circle datestamp, addressed to Col. Thomas E. Chickering, 41st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Banks’ Expedition, Genl. Grovers Division, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Manuscript docketing at left and recipient’s docketing reading “Recd Baton Rouge, Jan 23, 63.” Partial backflap remains. Colonel Chickering assumed command of the 41st Massachusetts Infantry on September 15, 1862. The regiment was deployed to New Orleans in November 1862 as part of Major General Nathaniel P. Banks’s Louisiana expedition and subsequently garrisoned Baton Rouge during the winter of 1862–1863. In April and May 1863, the regiment participated in the Opelousas expedition, where Chickering was appointed military governor and commanded Union forces engaged in foraging operations and the recruitment of formerly enslaved men into the Union Army.
