Printed Matter Wrapper

Printed matter wrapper addressed to Edwin B. Smith, Esq., Limerick, Maine with indistinct circular datestamp. The addressee was a Maine State Senator and a Justice of the Peace in Limerick. This wrapper most likely contained one circular weighing 3-4 oz or one small newspaper or other periodical. It is one of three wrappers in this sale addressed to "E. B. Smith Esq/Limerick / Maine." There was no 2c drop letter rate from printed matter rates July 1, 1851, to June 30, 1863. There following are possible 2c rates in effect from 1852 to 1861: -periodical weighing over 3c but not over 4c (rate was 1c for not over 3 oz and 1 for each additional oz), - circular weighing 3 oz to 4 oz (rate was 1c for up to 3 oz and 1 for each additional oz), -small periodical published monthly weighing 4 oz up to 5 oz (rate was 1/2 per ounce), -one transient newspaper (rate was 2 per item and not rate based), or a -book sent up to 3000 miles weighing 4 oz (rate was 1 1/2c each oz).
