Boyd's City Dispatch Post, 20L56 Type III, 1c Black on Pink, Used on Company Corner Cover, Purple Oval Company
Handstamp Purple Maltese Cross Postmark
The cover dated May 19, 1883 was posted fifteen days after the federal raid of May 4, 1883, when authorities entered the offices of Boyd’s and Hussey’s, seized large quantities of mail, and
detained several carriers for operating in violation of postal law, but before the June court decision.
The postal crackdown did not end the service immediately. According to the 1883 Annual Report of the Postmaster General, the government instituted actions against New York’s private expresses, obtained judgments, and later dismissed all pending suits
on the advice of the Solicitor of the Treasury and the Department of Justice.References: 1883 Annual Report of the Postmaster General(Image 1)

Boyd's City Dispatch, 20LU43, 1878 Red Entire, with Purple Oval Company Handstamp on Business Corner Card Dated 4 Days
After the Government Raided Boyd's & Hussey's
This cover, dated May 8, 1883, was used four days after the federal raid on Boyd’s and Hussey’s offices, an action in which authorities seized approximately twenty five thousand letters and
circulars and detained employees for operating private mail service in violation of federal law. The New York Times reported the raid on May 5, placing this cover just three days after the article and within the immediate aftermath of the
government’s enforcement action.
Covers used during this short post raid interval are scarce and represent the final stage of Boyd’s operation before its decline. Certificate: Click Here to View Certificate References: Private Mail Service Stopped:
