8152 imageConfederate States of America, Charleston, SC 1861 Circular Datestamp and Matching "PAID 5" in Circle on Stampless Semi-Official Envelope
"CHARLESTON S.C. MAR 15 1861"  circular datestamp with matching PAID 5 in circle on legal cover with manuscript “Official Business, Medical Purveyor’s Office”, addressed to Surgeon J. Walter Hill, 19 Regt SCV, Camp Simons, most of top back flap missing and trifle reduced at right, still Very Fine semi-official use. Camp Simons #1 was at Rantowles Station on the Charleston & Savannah Railroad, while Camp Simons #2 was at the village of Ravenel, also positioned on the railroad. Surgeon John Walter Hill (1834-1902) received his M.D. degree from the University of the City of New York Medical Department in 1958. He practiced medicine in Edgefield, SC, prior to the war. He mustered in to Capt. J. Abney’s Co Edgefield Reserves, 22nd SC Infantry in December 1861, subsequently passed the Confederate Army Board of Medical Examination and was appointed and confirmed Surgeon by the Confederate States Senate. He served in various units and states throughout the way, including a long stint with the 6th Texas Cavalry.(Image 1) (Image 2)

Pocket-sized TASCO educational booklet titled The Postage Stamps of the Confederate States of America, with text by Roger W. Sargent, complete with the full set of Springfield facsimile singles. Issued by Tatham Stamp & Coin Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts, this Confederate booklet is the TASCO T6 volume and was produced in 1941. $500 eight percent coupon bond with redemption date Jan 1, 1873. Lithographed by B. Duncan, Columbia, S.C. Only 1,338 were issued. Vignette is of John Henninger Reagan (1818-1905). His only job throughout in the Confederacy was the Postmaster General and he did outstanding job. He was born in Tennessee and moved to Texas.
