circular datestamp on clean legal envelope (9" x 4") to Henry Norgrove Esq, Lexington, Va., with manuscript at top "Treasury Department, 2nd Aud[itor's] Office, Off. Business," small tear at top away from stamp and markings.
Henry Norgrove (1814-1881) was a native of Berkshire near Oxford, England. He immigrated to Richmond, then to Charlottesville, before moving to Lexington in 1837. He was a tailor and clothes merchant. One of his sons, Edward W. Norgrove (1843-1863),
was serving in the Lexington Rifles. He was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville. His other son, William H. Norgrove (1840-1863), served as a Lieutenant in the Botetourt Artillery and died of wounds received at Port Gibson, Mississippi, in May 1863.
Henry Norgrove served in the Lexington Patrol during the war. He continued his tailoring career in Lexington until his death.(Image 1)

A 4 margin Most Unusual Stamp that
it was Barely Printed either from severely underinking the plate or perhaps from a plate too chilled to properly take on ink. example, tied by a full strike of the BLUE Petersburg, Va. circular datestamp dated JAN 15, 1863. Blue laid paper cover with
period pencil notation on the back stating the sender was Frank Brooke and that the letter was received the day after posting. The cover and the stamp severely faded.
