8029 65 image#65 1861 3c Rose, Endorsed "U.S.S. Acacia Off Charleston, S.C." with Port Royal, South Carolina Circular Datestamp and "DUE 6" Handstamp on 1864 Cover to Terryville, Connecticut
Only 10 Covers Recorded with "DUE 6"

Port Royal, South Carolina circular datestamp dated March 24, 1864 on cover addressed to Terryville, Connecticut with circular "DUE 6" handstamp at right. Manuscript ship endorsement at upper left reads "U.S.S. 'Acacia' Off Charleston, S.C. The U.S.S. Acacia patrolled the southern Atlantic coast from South Carolina to Florida as part of the Union blockading fleet. This letter was carried aboard the Acacia into Port Royal, South Carolina, which Union forces had reoccupied on November 7, 1861 and which served as the logistical hub for mail moving north by water. Because the cover lacked a ship's officer's endorsement, it could not qualify as a Sailor's Letter carried free of prepayment. The stamp was cancelled at Port Royal and the letter rated at twice the unpaid portion of the postage, accounting for the "DUE 6" marking, before being placed in a closed bag and carried north aboard ship.References: Letters Rated Due 6, Due 9, and Due 12 by Richard Graham(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)
