7154 imageG. Carter's Despatch, Black Handstamp with Curved Fancy "PAID" on 1849 Folded Letter
Scarce Arced "PAID" and Latest Reported Use

Black G. Carter's Despatch datestamp with curved fancy "PAID" on November 30, 1849 cover discussing payment of goods for church. According to Roth, it is very scarce to find an example of the handstamp "PAID", in any of its forms, on an envelope or folded letter which did not also bear an adhesive stamp. Hahn records this as the last use of the "PAID" handstamp in his notes.

Chestnut Street Line
Lot Symbol Catalog No Descrip Opening
7160 169L1 imageChestnut Street Line, 169L1, 1c Black on Pink Glazed, Used on Piece
One of Only Two Recorded Examples of This Incredibly Rare Local

Used on small piece, with large margins to just in at bottom. Facial erosion. Only four examples of the Chestnut Street Line local stamps are recorded in any form: three on pink glazed paper (one on cover, one on piece signed Sloane, and this example on piece) and one on cover on yellow glazed paper. The Chestnut Street Line operated a horse-drawn omnibus along one of Philadelphia's main commercial thoroughfares, providing a convenient means of depositing mail for residents and businesses situated far from the Post Office at Third and Dock Streets. The omnibus route passed the Merchants' Exchange, where the Philadelphia Post Office was housed, extending westward approximately two miles to the Schuylkill River. Although traveling letter boxes were documented on other Philadelphia omnibus routes serving outlying districts, no formal record of a receptacle on this particular line has been confirmed.References: A Report on Some Short-Lived Local Posts of Philadelphia, Introduction: The Posts By Steven M.
