Brainard & Co
Lot Symbol Catalog No Descrip Opening
7121 24L1 imageBrainard & Co., 24L1, 1c Black, Huge Margins with Remnant of a Second Stamp Affixed on 1844 Folded Letter, Conjunctive American Mail Co. Three-Line Handstamp
One of Only Two Recorded Conjunctive Usages

One of Two Recorded Covers with Brainard's Stamp Used in Conjunction with American Letter Mail Company Service Bottom stamp with large square margins and manuscript "T" cancel, denoting Troy as the office of origin (not tied), with a remnant of a second stamp at upper left. Conjunctive red "Forwarded by / American Mail Co. / No. 12 State St. Boston" three-line handstamp. Ink smears at right, tiny tear in right margin of stamp. Very fine stamp, presentable cover. The folded letter was mailed July 26, 1844 and received July 30, 1844, from Troy, N.Y. to Henry Hill Esq. at Pemberton Square, Boston, a distance of about 150 miles. The letter enclosed $37.00, undoubtedly triggering a double rate, as indicated by the two Brainard stamps totaling 25c each. Since Brainard had no office in Boston, the letter was transferred to American (Letter) Mail Company for final delivery. A postscript in the letter reads: "To save expense I (have) for(war)'d (this) by Express & (have) pay(paid?) postage. If you prefer the oth(er) way, the Mail, please say so in your next." — "the Mail" referring to the U.S. Express Mail, which would have cost approximately treble the single letter sheet rate of 18½c, or 56½c, compared to Brainard's 25c (or only 20c at Brainard's discount rate of 20 stamps for $1.00).
