3084 68a imageCover from Legendary English Novelist, Charles Dickens, to English Actor William Macready
Written by Charles Dickens during second Reading Tour in America

10c Dark Green on 1868 cover from New Haven, CT to Cheltenham, England. Addressed in renowned English novelist, Charles Dickens', hand to famed English actor, and close friend, W. C. MACREADY. Not only were the two close friends, but Dickens was also godfather for Macready's son Henry and Macready was godfather to Dickens's daughter, Kate Macready Dickens. This cover with seal, addressed in Dicken's hand is postmarked, New Haven, Ct., March 24, 1868 with "By Cunard from New York Wednesday 25 March 1868" in manuscript in upper left hand corner. The New Haven postmark reveals that this cover was written during Dicken's second Reading Tour in the US. On Mar 24, 1868, just one date before this letter was postmarked, Dickens performed at Music Hall, New Haven. The letter that was accompanied by this cover is featured and transcribed in The Letters of Charles Dickens: Volume 12: 1868-1870, and shares of Dicken's experience traveling in America.
