1022 LO2, 11a imageEagle Carrier, LO2, 1c Blue, Cut to Shape, Used on Backflap of 1852 Cover with Four Margin #11a 3c Brownish-Carmine, Position 94R1L, Tied on Front
A Highly Unusual Usage of the Eagle Carrier as a Letter Seal

The Eagle Carrier, cut to shape, affixed to the backflap of a small cover and serving as a letter seal rather than as prepayment of carrier service. The front with a 3c in a rich brownish-carmine shade with magnificent four margins from plate position 94R1L, tied by a blue Philadelphia, Pennsylvania circular datestamp, addressed to Delafield, Wisconsin. The Eagle Carrier was torn in two when the envelope was opened but remains intact on the backflap. The 3c stamp prepays the standard interstate letter rate to Wisconsin. A note by Dr. Chase opines that the Carrier was used as a seal but nonetheless "carried the letter to the mails," representing a highly unusual application of the Eagle Carrier outside its intended postal function.
