Folded stampless letter from Kellogg Hurtqust in Utica, N.Y. to Hon. Mr. Titus, Albany, N.Y., postmarked at Albany with red circular “ALBANY FEB 18” handstamp. Addressed to the Chairman of the Committee on Trade & Manufactures. Likely sent as a single-sheet collect letter or carried by hand and posted at Albany. Treated as a drop letter as the carrier fee in Feb 1845 was 2c.

First Day of 5c Rate

Court summons mailed July 1, 1845, on the first day of the new 5c standard rate for a 1/2 oz. letter traveling less than 300 miles, postmarked with a green JUL 1 BERRYVILLE, VA circular date stamp and matching “PAID” straightline. The folded legal document is addressed to the Clerk of the Court of Clarke County. A notation was made on reverse of the summons by the deputy sheriff, "Executed by leaving a copy at the home of the within witness". The summons was refolded, sealed, and mailed to the Clerk of the Court in Berryville. Postmarked with a red Charles Town, VA circular datestamp and manuscript "July 24" and "5" (due), the postage to be collected from addressee.

2106 imageBuffalo, New York 1847 Stampless Folded Letter with "Paid" in Scroll Handstamp to New York City
Penned and Signed by Future President Millard Fillmore

Folded letter datelined “Buffalo, Feby 22th, 1847,” addressed to D. S. Kennedy, Esq., New York City, with clear blue BUFFALO N.Y. double-oval datestamp and matching blue “PAID” in scroll handstamp, manuscript “10” rate marking at upper right. Written and signed by Millard Fillmore during his Buffalo legal career. Millard Fillmore (1800–1874) studied law and established his practice in Buffalo, initially partnering with Asa Rice and later Joseph Clary. After the dissolution of his partnership with Clary in 1833, Fillmore formed a new firm with Nathan K. Hall and Solomon G. Haven under the name Fillmore, Hall & Haven. The firm rose to prominence as one of the leading legal practices in Western New York. Hall later withdrew, and Fillmore departed the firm in 1847. In 1848, Fillmore was elected Vice President under Zachary Taylor, and upon Taylor’s death in 1850, he assumed the presidency on July 9 of that year.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5)

2107 image1849 Saratoga Springs Stampless Cover, 2c Local Drop Letter Rate, Addressed to Reuben H. Walworth, an Influential Jurist
Only Two Known

Folded stampless letter postmarked Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Dec. 22 (1849), addressed locally to Hon. R.H. Walworth. Marked with blue circular town postmark and matching "2" handstamp for the 2c drop letter rate, applicable for letters delivered from the post office without further mailing. The cover with vertical file fold and creasing. This letter did not leave Saratoga Springs, it was deposited at the post office by the sender and delivered directly to the recipient. The 2c rate for drop letters was in effect from July 1, 1845 to June 30, 1851, and applies to mail under ½ oz. Reuben Hyde Walworth (1788–1867) was a prominent American jurist and the last Chancellor of New York, serving from 1828 until the court was abolished in 1847. Known for his legal scholarship and influence on equity law, he also served as a U.S. Congressman and was nominated three times to the U.S. Supreme Court by President John Tyler, though the Senate never confirmed him. Walworth played a significant role in shaping 19th-century American jurisprudence and remained an active public figure throughout his life in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Extremely Scarce Usage

Folded letter locally used in Indianapolis, docketed February 13, 1847, with red "DROP" and red "2" in circle rate handstamps. There is a vertical tear through the "2" marking. A Very Fine example of this extremely scarce drop letter usage; ASCC lists these markings as used circa 1850.

Printed bill of lading dated August 9, 1805, at Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, signed by ship's master William Marenner of the ship Jane. The reverse with an affidavit executed the same day before the Judicial Tribunal of Saint-Pierre, Guadeloupe, with intact red wax seal of office reading SCEAU JUDICIAIRE DE LA GUADELOUPE. The bill of lading records shipment by John Pierre Servaton, merchant of Pointe-à-Pitre, of twenty-two hogsheads of clayed sugars marked "J.J. No. 1 to 22," consigned to John Jubel of New York at a freight rate of ten dollars per hogshead. The accompanying affidavit, executed before a colonial judge with Thomas Coffinger serving as sworn English-language interpreter, declares under oath that the cargo is the property of John Jubel, Citizen of the United States of America residing in New York, and that no subject or citizen of any belligerent power has any interest in the shipment.

2120 image1843 Galápagos Islands Folded Letter with Red New Bedford, Mass Handstamp
Among the Earliest Recorded Letters Originating from the Galápagos Islands

Folded letter datelined May 3, 1843, written aboard the whaling ship Eliza L. B. Jenney “off the Galápagos Islands,” endorsed “Per Ship Hector/May 3rd, 1843” and addressed to Bedford, Mass with manuscript "8". The cover with some foxing and a hole at top. The letter describes the author's good health, his longing for home, and missing items such as raisins and “sider” (cider). He offers candid thoughts on shipboard life, expressing dislike for the captain, commenting on the second mate and crew, and noting the scarcity of whales. He details their voyage around Cape Horn and the hot weather experienced, sending regards to his relatives and expressing hope to return home after three or four more months. A fascinating letter, and one of the earliest recorded examples originating from the Galápagos Islands.
