2054 image1791 Stampless Folded Letter, Charleston, South Carolina to Ghent, Belgium, Forwarded at Rotterdam, with Antwerp "H" Entry Handstamp
Rare Early Mail to Belgium

Stampless folded bankruptcy notice datelined Charleston, August 10, 1791, addressed to Mr. John Hamelot, Gend (Ghent). The letter was privately carried from Charleston to Holland, forwarded at Rotterdam on December 16, 1791 by Rocquetten Elsevier, a forwarding agent recorded by Kenneth Rowe only in 1791, then routed to Ghent via Antwerp where it received the Antwerp "H" entry handstamp. The letter is written and signed by Florian Charles Mey and Fran. Dijckbosch, merchants at Charleston, addressed to John Hamelot at Ghent, concerning the affairs of one Peter Buyck. The writers explain that Buyck, pressed by sundry creditors and with certain creditors urging preferences, has assigned the residue of his property to the subscribers in justice to the remaining creditors on the terms of an enclosed copy of assignment, and they request that Hamelot examine the assignment and signify his determination as early as possible.
