Illustrated in Letters of Gold, An Attractive and Scarce Usage

Wells, Fargo & Co. "NOV 1 SAC. CITY" oval handstamp in blue, from San Francisco to AA Cohen in Alameda. Alfred A. Cohen became directly involved with Adams & Co. during the financial panic of 1855, when he was appointed one of three receivers to manage the company’s assets following its collapse. His role was to safeguard and distribute the firm’s holdings, but controversy arose when he was accused of embezzling $400,000—a charge that led to a grand larceny indictment. The case, People v. Cohen (1857), reached the California Supreme Court, which ultimately reversed the judgment due to flaws in the indictment. Despite the scandal, Cohen went on to have a significant career in California’s transportation sector, serving as president of the San Francisco and Alameda Railroad and later as chief attorney for the Central Pacific Railroad.
