15003 imageFort Apache, 1890 Manuscript Commissary Receipt, "PAID" Handstamp
Arizona Territory

Manuscript document datelined "Fort Apache A.T., Oct 22/90" and written by Commissary Sergeant D.B. Jeffer, acknowledging receipt of "$1.26 for fourteen (14) lbs. Beans" from a Mr. J.A. Bridges; with three strikes of boxed "PAID" handstamp. A scarce surviving example of frontier military commerce from the famed Fort Apache—one of the most storied outposts of the Arizona Territory. Located in the heart of Apache lands, the fort played a central role during the Indian Wars and later served as a reservation agency post. Manuscript material from this period, particularly involving enlisted supply personnel, is seldom encountered.

Early California Gold Dust Buyer and the 2nd and 4th Mayor of San Francisco

The Bank of California check dated May 15, 1872, in the amount of $500.00, payable to H. Sinton & Co., and signed by C.J. Brenham. Featuring a North Pacific Transportation Company vignette at left. Charles J. Brenham was a notable figure in early California history—an 1849er, Sacramento River steamboat captain, partner in the gold dust firm Sanders & Brenham, and second mayor of San Francisco (1851–52). Financial documents bearing his autograph are scarce and highly desirable, especially those connected to prominent banking institutions like the Bank of California.
