1779 1901 (July 15) Cover to England franked 1896 1d carmine tied by cork cancel type K101, a St. Helena c.d.s alongside, endorsed "Per S.S Zambezi via Cape Colony", August 16 arrival backstamp. The S.S "Zambezi" left St. Helena on July 16th, the only time it ever called at St. Helena. A fine cover.

1780 1902 (July 24) Cover to Germany, 2½d postage paid by 1884-94 ½d, 1890-97 1½d and 1902 KEVII ½d tied by St. Helena datestamps, an unusual commercial use of stamps from three different issues. The reverse endorsed "G. Ely, Deadwood Camp", P.O.W mail no longer censored at this late date two months after the war ended. Minor creasing, unobtrusive vertical fold.

Diplomatic Bag Mail

1783 1887 (Oct 30) Letter from W. Grey-Wilson, Governor of St. Helena, on notepaper of The Castle but written from his residence "Plantation", to his mother in England, sent by diplomatic bag with a 1d lilac cancelled in London (Nov 15), the envelope signed "W. Grey-Wilson" in the corner. The letter includes news of the arrival of ships, the arrival and departure of various troops, Sir Donald Currie arrived and had a meeting to discuss the new mail service. Minor staining, unusual; Grey-Wilson saved 5d postage by sending this in the diplomatic bag.

1785 image1895 (May 20) Envelope (flap missing) simply addressed "The Children" with violet oval cachet "THE CASTLE / 11 JUNE 1895 / ST. HELENA", the enclosed letter from Lady Grey-Wilson in Edinburgh, apparently sent within a packet, probably by diplomatic bag, to her husband with the Castle cachet applied upon arrival. Possibly unique, all other recorded examples of this type CH2 cachet on documents. Photo on Page 222. (Image1)
