1/- Progressive die proofs in black on glazed card, the remarkable and unique series of ten proofs, each slightly larger than stamp size with 1-3mm margins, comprising:
1.  Head Die A in oval-lined background, uncleared surround.
2.  Head Die B, state 1A in oval-lined background, uncleared surround.
3.  Head Die B, state 1B in oval-lined background with outline of frame and value tablet, surround uncleared.
4.  Head Die B, state 2, scrollwork blocked in and pineapple and shell unfinished, surround uncleared.
5.  Head Die B, state 2, as last but surround cleared.
6.  Head Die B, state 2, as last but unadopted lined background in scrollwork.
7.  Head Die C, state 1. Similar to No. 4 but with lower right scrollwork practically finished, surround cleared.
8.  Head Die C, state 2, as last but scrolls and pineapple finished. Conch shell unfinished, surround uncleared.
9.  Head Die C, state 2, pineapple lightened, shell finished, surround cleared.
10.  Head Die D, complete die, as last with value added.
These proofs were in the collection of King Victor Emanuel II of Italy who died in 1878, and have since graced the Ludington and Vestey Collections. They have been illustrated and written about by Robson Lowe and Morris Ludington in “The
Philatelistâ€, and in the Bahamas handbook edited by Peter Fernbank. Proofs 4 and 7 with heavy creases, otherwise fine, a second example of proofs 1, 3 and 10 recorded (see following three lots), the other seven unique, an exceptional group showing
the progress in the completion of the die for this stamp, the first Bahamas stamp engraved by De La Rue. (10). (Image1) (Image2)
