140 image1648 (Feb 8) Warrant from Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick "To my very loving friends the Commissioners of the Navy" regarding the transfer of the carpenter Robert Bradley from the "Dove" to the frigate "Increase". Essex was Lord High Admiral of the Commonwealth navy; in early 1648 he endeavoured unsuccessfully to regain the fleet, the greater part of which had revolted to Charles I, but successfully organised the building of a new fleet for Parliament. Until 1642 Rich had been Postmaster General. A fine historical document. Photo on Page 30. (Image1)

141 imageCromwell. 1653 (June 9) Entire letter from Robert Lilburne at Dalkeith, addressed "For his Excy General Cromwell these, Hast Hast att Whitehall". Lilburne complains of a shortage of stores, there being less than 700 barrels of powder in all of Scotland; he asks for further stores to be sent, money for the forces and victuals for ships. Lilburne, a Commissioner at the trial of Charles I, was one of the 59 who signed the King's death warrant; he was sentenced to death in 1660, commuted to life imprisonment. A rare "Hast Hast" endorsement on a Commonwealth letter from Scotland to Oliver Cromwell. Photo on Page 30. (Image1)

142 image1660 (Oct 16) Entire letter from the Guildhall, London, sent by the Commissioners for Disbanding the Army, addressed "To the high sheriff of the county of Derby, for his maties officiall service, post paid". The letter concerns the raising of money to pay off the Cromwellian army, and is signed by three Privy Councillors, Wheeler, Richard Browne (Lord Mayor of London) and Thomas Player (Chamberlain of London). A fine historical letter, postage paid despite the official contents and inscription on the address panel. Photo on Page 30. (Image1)

143 image1660 (Dec 11) Entire letter written and signed by the Secretary of State Sir William Morice from Whitehall, addressed "For my much honored brother Edmunde Prideaux esq at Padstowe in Cornwall, att Plymouth leave this with the postmaster to be conveyed" and signed "Will Morice", allowed to go free. Prideaux has been made one of the Deputy Lieutenants of Cornwall; his commission is being sent by Mr Peirce. A fine early free frank after the Restoration and an interesting inscription for the Plymouth Postmaster. Photo on Page 30. (Image1)

144 image1662 (Mar 13) Entire letter from Earl Clare in London, addressed "for Mr Henry Shipton at Hamstall Ridware near Yoxall in Staffordshire, leave this at the post house in Litchfield to be sent", the address panel signed "Clare", delivered free. The letter includes "you were cosend in paying three pence for the carriage of your former letter to me though I did not pay for it heer, for no member of either house of Parlement that is heer doth pay during the sitting of Parlement for any letter he either sends or receives". 145 image1664 (Oct 11) Entire letter from Edward Walker, Clerk of the Council at Whitehall, addressed "To Mr Thomas Cropley, Town Clerk of the Borough of Thetford in Norfolk" with the additional address "Thomas Cropley at his Chamber in Furnifalls Inn in Holborn" delivered free, reverse with "OC/13" Bishop Mark and seal of the Privy Council. The letter orders the Mayor of Thetford to attend a meeting concerning a petition of the Mayor and Burgesses, Cropley to attend if the Mayor cannot make it. Photo on Page 30. (Image1)

A scarce letter from the period of the great plague (when Parliament was transferred to Oxford), postage paid as Parliament was not then sitting, the MPs franking privilege therefore suspended. 148 1689 (July 23) Entire letter from London addressed "For Charles Orchard Esq., Collector of theire Maties Customs at Exon, Devon", charged 3d with "JY/23" Bishop Mark. The letter concerns a patent, and a hearing before the Lords of the Navy. The Customs never had the franking privilege. The letter a little damp stained, the address panel fine.

149 1689 (Jan 26) Entire letter written from Grays Inn by William Phillips, which includes "The Lords have put off the grand debate until Tuesday and have adjourned till Monday. The Princess is daily expected and its confidently said that the P. and Princess will be both crowned next week, tho I am afraid that both houses will be much divided". Addressed "For Thomas Walker Esq., in Brecon, South Wales" and signed "Frank E. Jones" with "JA/26" Bishop Mark, delivered free. Phillips and Jones were both M.Ps in the Convention Parliament which decided that the Prince and Princess of Orange should be made King and Queen, following the flight of James II and the collapse of the Government.
