954 image1853 (Jan 27) Cover addressed in the handwriting of Prince Frederick William Hesse to "His Serene Highness The Landgrave Charles Augustus of Hesse, Augustenau, Electoral-Hesse, Germany" and initialled "FWH", with red "PAID / AT / HONG KONG" crowned circle, backstamped at Hong Kong, Triest, Halle and Eisenach, various rates, a very unusual destination from Hong Kong. Also two letters written in German by Prince Frederick Hesse from H.M.S "Cleopatra" at Hong Kong (20 March 1851, 25 Sept. 1852), which include references to Whampoa, Canton, Nanking, Shanghai, Borneo and Manila. Prince Frederick Hesse was third in line to the Danish throne and became Elector of Hesse in 1875; in 1849 he joined H.M.S "Cleopatra" to train as a midshipman, sailing to India, Burma, and the Far East (see lots 955, 1071). The cover posted unpaid with boxed "BEARING", seven backstamps from London, Aachen, Deutz-Minden T.P.O, Hamm-Padeborg T.P.O, Cassel and Eisenach, various rates. Prince Frederick Hesse was third in line to the Danish throne and became Elector of Hesse in 1875; in 1849 he joined H.M.S "Cleopatra" to train as a midshipman, sailing to India, Burma, and the Far East (see lots 954, 1071).
