551 Union. 1796 (Feb 4) Entire letter headed from "Union Hospital Ship at Sheerness", addressed to Dundee with curved "QUEEN / BOROUGH" handstamp, London and Edinburgh backstamps, "4", "8" and "1/10" charges. The "Union" served as a hospital ship from 1793 until 1802, and was the first hospital ship to have special accommodation for female nurses; between Sept. 1795 and Feb. 1796 the "Union" received 479 sailors from the Russian fleet suffering from Typhus, of whom 34 died. A very scarce early hospital ship letter.

552 Tromp. 1807 (Sep 24) Entire letter headed from the "Tromp Hospital Ship, Falmouth", written by Surgeon James Moffat, addressed to "George Eastlake, Offg Judge Advocate, Plymouth Dock", charged 7d. The address panel headed "On His Majestys Service" and endorsed "Tromp", with Falmouth and Plymouth Dock mileage marks. Moffat has sent the Admiralty a copy of the charges against John Hill, Captain on H.M Hired Armed Ship the "Hamber", with a list of witnesses who will be called. The "Tromp" served as a hospital ship from 1803 to 1810. Very scarce.

553 1828-1903 Ephemera, cover and a card, with a fine 1828 Certificate from the Hospital Ship "Grampus" lying off Deptford Creek - "Alexander Wlaroff" aged 45, native of Archangel was admitted on board the above hospital ship ..... and was discharged at his own request cured ..... he conducted himself whilst on board in an orderly manner", with a fine picture of the ship; 1838 print of the Hospital Ship "Dreadnought" lying off Greenwich (reverse with Seamans Hospital Society accounts); 1873 print of the "Victor Emmanuel" hospital ship off the Gold Coast (from "The Graphic"); 1903 picture postcard of the "Maine", posted from the ship at Malaga; 1868 cover from Bute Docks with "Hamadryed Hospital Ship, Cardiff" printed flap. (5).

554 Trojan/"Princess of Wales". 1900 Covers from G.B, one to a soldier in South Africa and redirected to "Hospital Ship Trojan, Durban"; a registered cover to a soldier on the S.S "Trojan" at Madeira, redirected to Southampton but returned endorsed "Disembarked, not known"; and a cover to "Pte J. Rondel R.A.M.C, Hospital Ship Princess of Wales, Cape Town" redirected to St. Helena, with London and St. Helena transit and arrival datestamps. Also four magazine pictures showing the "Maine" (3) or "Trojan". (3+).

556 1917-19 Stampless O.A.S covers from unidentified military transports probably used as hospital ships, comprising 1917 card from a member of the V.A.D, St. Johns Ambulance with A.P.O S.100 c.d.s of Taranto, army censor and violet "CENSORED / H.M.T.E 826"; 1917 cover with Base A.P.O Z c.d.s of Alexandria, triangular "CENSORED / MASTER" and boxed "ON ACTIVE SERVICE" (both previously used on the Hospital Ship "Lanfranc" sunk in April 1917) and "TRANSPORT No. 6812"; and 1919 cover with A.P.O SZ4 of Ismailia and triangular "CENSORED / BY MASTER / H.M.T.G 1260". (3).

558 Russia. 1918 Stampless O.A.S covers from hospital ships in Russia, comprising cover with London Received from H.M Ship machine (June 19 1918) and circular "HOSPITAL SHIP / P.C / 8 / R.A.M.C" used on the "Kalyan" (at Archangel, Oct 1918 - June 1919), and a cover to the USA from an American soldier with "ARMY POST OFFICE / P.B -" (4 FE 19, the number unfortunately off the cover) and circular "HOSPITAL SHIP / P.C / 25 / R.A.M.C" (possibly used on the "Braemar Castle").
