355 imageBanstead. 1840-46 Entire letters (3), an entire and cover comprising 1840 letter prepaid 1d in cash backstamped "+ / BANSTEAD / PAID" (SY 52), 1840 letter with a 1d stamp removed backstamped "+ / BANSTEAD" and an 1841 entire franked 1d backstamped "BANSTEAD", also 1843-46 letter and cover with red undated circle handstamps. The three straight line handstamps clearly locally made by the same individual, the Paid and unpaid handstamps with a cross above very similar but with differences to the lettering, the 1841 straight line handstamp apparently the previous "+ / BANSTEAD" handstamp with the cross removed. A remarkable and exceptionally rare group, the Paid handstamp probably the example recorded in the County Catalogue, the other two handstamps both unlisted and previously unrecorded, all three possibly unique. 358 imageBletchingley. 1840 (July 4) Wrapper (side flaps removed) with printed heading "Royal Naval Female School" posted within London franked by a 1d black, LL plate 2 (cut into at sides) tied by a red Maltese Cross, the wrapper then turned and posted on July 6th to Blenchingly franked by a 1d black vertical pair, SF-TF plate 4 (with three good margins, touched at left) each cancelled by a red Maltese Cross. The wrapper was again turned and reposted to the original addressee in London prepaid 1d in cash, handstamped straight line "BLETCHINGLEY" and "PAID" (SY 68, only recorded in 1840) with a Godstone (July 7) backstamp, a red Paid arrival datestamp tying the original 1d black. A remarkable item, postally used three times with single and pair of 1d blacks, and cash payment with the scarce Bletchingley Paid handstamp. Photo on Page 58. (Image1) (Image2)
