301 1852-53 Stampless covers with enclosed letters addressed to "His Serene Highness The Landgrave Charles Augustus of Hesse, Augustenau, Eisenach, Hesse, Germany"; the first written from Windsor, the second written by Prince Frederick William of Hesse from Gordon Castle, Fochabers, the notepaper and envelope flap both with the castle embossed within a coloured oval. William of Hesse married the daughter of the Russian Tsar in 1844, and became Elector of Hesse in 1875. In 1853 he was third in line to the Danish throne, his sister Louise became Queen of Denmark. (2).

302 c.1870 Mourning envelope with "Osborne" embossed flap, addressed to "Miss A. Symon, Balmoral, Crathie, Aberdeenshire", the 1d red cancelled "PORTSMOUTH / SORTING CARRIAGE" c.d.s (year omitted), the envelope containing a Carte de Visite photograph of John Brown by W&D Downey. Part flap missing and small tear at upper edge, otherwise fine and an unusual pair. (2).

303 St. Thomas. 1876-77 Covers to Mrs Thomas in Falmouth, three with "H.M.S SHAH" printed on the flap, three covers from St. Thomas with "C51" cancels franked 6d grey plate 15 + 1/- plate 12 (2 covers) or 6d grey plate 15 single + pair (two covers "via Panama", another with piece torn from upper left corner), a fourth cover endorsed "via Magellan" with 1/- plate 12 cancelled upon arrival in London. Also other covers from Gibraltar or London both franked 2½d. H.M.S "Shah" was the flagship of the Pacific Station; on May 29th 1877 she fought an action against the Peruvian ship "Huascar" during the Battle of Pacocha. (6).

The 1666 (Oct 8) letter with a Bishop Mark of "OC/19", a rare early use after the Great Fire of London of Sept. 3/4; the Bishop Marks were destroyed during the fire and were not replaced for several weeks. 305 image1702 (June 22) Entire letter from Reigate "For Mr Roger Gordon at the Right Honourle the Countess of Plymouths house in Chelsea near London" charged 2d, backstamped "JU/22" Bishop Mark and scarce London Penny Post "F/AFT" heart shaped time handstamp (Jay 370, final year of use). Minor soiling, an uncommon use of this time handstamp on a letter transferred from the General Post to the Penny Post for delivery. Photo on Page 52. (Image1)

306 1841-61 Entire letters and covers with 1d reds, also some 1d pink envelopes, with Maltese Cross cancels (27), numeral or duplex cancels (224), at least 85 with straight line or circular receiver handstamps, ten backstamped with codeless crown datestamps (used on mail from official sources), one cover backstamped with the rare and unusual double ring "General / Post Office / 24th / March / 1845" in red (two examples recorded, both on this same date) and the standard c.d.s. (251).

309 Boxhill. 1901 Long covers addressed to "James Webster, Berrys Cross, Boxhill" both endorsed by passenger train, bearing a 1d lilac and 2d L.B.& S.C.R letter stamp, one with both stamps cancelled by violet boxed "TRANSFERRED AT / LONDON BRIDGE, L.B. & S.C.R. / and to be so abstracted" with a Dorking c.d.s alongside, the other with both stamps cancelled by manuscript cross and oval "BOXHILL & BURFORD BRIDGE / STATION / L.B. & S.C. RY", the first with the address a little waterstained. (2).

318 c.1690-1730 Entire letters from (4) or to (2) Reigate including c.1725 letter to Kensington charged 2d with rare first type "RYGATE" handstamp (SY 526), c.1690 letter from Gatton to Lichfield and 1704 letter from Copthorn to Flanchford near Reigate both sent via London with Bishop Marks and a "2" charge increased to "In all 5", 1707 letter to London charged 4d, etc. Also a 1686 London Gazette with a postal notice on the post from London to Reigate, and three early maps of Surrey. A good lot, the c.1725 handstamp one of just two examples recorded by Latham & Gibbs. (10).

319 1761-1840 Entire letters and entires (34, also three fronts) all with Reigate handstamps, including straight line "RYEGATE" types SY 528, 536, 538 (3), "RYE / GATE" (2, SY 532), "22 RYEGATE" (2, SY 534, one superb, the other a very worn handstamp with the mileage barely struck), later mileage marks or mileage removed handstamps, undated circles, 4d Post entires (3, one free), other frees, etc. A good lot, most very fine strikes, the pre 1790 handstamps all scarce. 320 1816 (Sep 5) Entire letter from the Duke of St. Albans at Worthing, addressed to "F. Freeling Esq., General Post Office", complaining about the Reigate Postmaster - "I thank you about your advice about pouches for my letters but the Postmaster at Ryegate refuses to comply ... I told him it was your suggestion & that I would give him a Guinea at Xmas for his troubles .... I think him unreasonable as I understand he gets £30 per annum from the General Post Office, he makes £20 a year by the Penny for each letter & £2 a year for the Merstham bag making £52 a year besides other charges - for instance he charged me two pence for one letter put in at Ryegate, I collected this letter which had never been out of his house .... he says the two pence was for responsibility. I told the Postmaster at Merstham I would give him a Guinea every Xmas and he seems extremely desirous to serve the public, it is a pity Merstham is not a regular Post Office". Also a free front signed by St. Albans. (2).
