Paid” with double arc despatch backstamp, fair to good “PAID/AT/BARBADOES” crowned circle, partially overstruck by London Paid arrival c.d.s. of Dec. 9, both in red, rated “1/-”, receiver notes letter sent by Lt. Barbados: The Barbados “6” Charge Mark, 1854, two incoming envelopes addressed to Capt. Edgar, 69th Regt. of Foot in Barbados, both with Clifton double arc and London crown in red, the first (Sept. 16) endorsed “Packet” with “5” charge deleted and showing extremely rare handstruck “6” mark, the second (Dec. 1) similarly with “5” deleted and “6” added in ms. The 6d. packet rate from Britain to the West Indies was in operation from 1854 to 1863, apportioned 5d. to the G.P.O. + 1d. to the Colony. Just one other example of the handstruck “6” is known, also on a letter from the Edgar correspondence despatched Oct. 1 1854. Photo. (Image1)
