1211 Plate number accumulation, this has to be, by far, the strangest lot that we have ever offered, however we should be excused because we were forced to it by one of our "good" clients, it is strange because there is not a single stamp in the lot, just pieces of the selvage with plate numbers as removed from blocks or singles, this is a box with about 60 glassines stuffed with these little pieces of selvage, we estimate that there is at least 10,000 here, period ranges from as early as the 1920's-30's to relatively modern, our eccentric client swears that there are collectors with a passion for plate numbers who would really want a lot such as this to while away the winter hours searching for that elusive plate number he knows exists but has not been able to document, well here it is. Est. 150-200

1213 c imageA fascinating and highly varied postal history correspondence of Col. Charles Ellet, famed U.S. civil engineer, consisting of a total of well over 200 covers in the period of 1843-1862, all addressed to Charles Ellet (usually without letters), the history of the man is as interesting as the postal history represented, his early professional years were devoted to bridge and railroad construction, he is famed for constructing the first wire suspension bridge in the United States, the first suspension bridge across the Niagara River, and world's longest single span bridge at that time, for years he worked on designing ships to be used as rams in war, but this was pretty much ignored by the government until the Civil War when the Merrimac was built by the Confederacy using suggestions made by him prior to the war, he was then appointed a colonel of engineers and commissioned to buy ships and convert them into rams for the Union (includes three contemporaneous photographs of ram ships), the ships were highly successful, but unfortunately he died of a wound received on board one of his ram ships in a battle at Memphis in 1862; the covers range from stampless to stamp issues of 1861, includes two covers with #1, one with a pair, plus many other interesting frankings, there is a special emphasis in private local issues with 20 stampless or stamped covers, this lot is also rich in interesting markings, there are even some foreign covers including 1850's period stamped covers from France, Switzerland and England, condition is quite varied ranging from faults to very fine; a wonderful lot for the postal history collector, all with an intriguing historical connection; examination is essential to properly appreciate the scope of the fascinating material contained here.
