93 og 46 image#46, 30c Yellow orange reprint, without gum as issued, an incredibly select example of this reprint rarity, possessing outstanding centering amid extravagantly large margins which are most uncharacteristic, with its perforations clearing the design all around which, in our opinion, occurs on probably less than 10% of the 480 issued, radiantly rich color, extremely fine; a handsome stamp; 1974 and 1989 PF certificates. 1861 First Design "August" Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
97 og 55 image#55, 1c Indigo "August", full clean original gum, lightly hinged, fabulously fresh and crisp, with intense characteristic "August" color, extraordinarily well centered, especially when compared to other known examples, as most are found more strongly centered to the top, single slightly nibbed perforation at bottom mentioned for accuracy only, very fine and wonderfully choice. It is believed that a total of 24 copies exist of the One Cent First Design or so-called "August" Issue. Of this total, two are cancelled and another is housed in the New York Public Library collection, leaving only 21 uncancelled copies available to collectors. More than half of the available examples are found either with faults, without gum, or both. In fact, there are only eight that exist which are sound and still retain their original gum, with the Lessin example being among this elite group. An exciting opportunity to acquire a premium quality original gum example of one of the rarest stamps in United States philately. Accompanied by a 1989 PF certificate. (Image) 20,000.00

SOLD for $18,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
98 og 56 image#56, 3c Brown rose "August", brilliantly fresh, gorgeous rich color, well centered within uncommonly large margins, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, very fine and choice; 1977 and 2001 PF certificates. (Image) 475.00

SOLD for $550.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
99 og 56 image#56, 3c Brown rose "August", quite well centered within much larger margins than usual, rich color, large part o.g., diagonal crease, very fine appearance. (Image) 475.00

SOLD for $110.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
100 og 57 image#57, 5c Brown "August", a wonderfully fresh original gum example of this challenging and important rarity, featuring sumptuously rich and intense color, plus its impression is razor-sharp on crisp paper, rather well centered, redistributed o.g., single perforation tip added at top left, accompanying certificate also states "small stains removed" which we find so minor that it is almost impossible to detect, otherwise very fine; only 35 examples of the Five Cent "August" issue are known (two of which are cancelled) and only 16 of the existing population still retain any portion of their original gum; this value is notorious for being found with varying degrees of faults, in fact, none of the recorded original gum examples are completely sound; a highly collectable example of this extremely rare stamp; 1998 PF certificate. (Image) 14,000.00

SOLD for $9,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
